Update # 5

Today has been a bit hard for Jake but he has made good progress. By 10:30 pm last night the breathing tube was out. This morning he was able to sit up outside the bed. All arterial monitoring lines and the cathetar are out so he's more comfortable and not fighting aganist his arm and leg restraints anymore. Took 3 nurses and my dad earlier this morning to handle him. We're expected to be out of CVICU by the morning sometime.

The surgery itself went very well. The membrane beneath the aortic valve was removed and the aortic valve and mitral valves were repaired. No aortic valve regurgitation is present anymore and only a trace amount of mitral regurgitation is present. Hopefully, the mitral valve will grow and tighten up some as it is very small at this time so that's what we'll be keeping an eye on for the next several years.

Even if Jake does happen to have another surgery down the road we are blessed that Jake's defect is easily repairable as most congenital heart defects are not. Our neighbor in CVICU was born just a few days ago with only 3 chambers in his heart. Dr. Heinle (Jake's surgeon) performed open heart surgery in him right before Jake's to implant a device so he can live long enough to receive a heart transplant. Most of the CVICU are babies under one with an extended CVICU stay and a long road ahead.

So glad to hear things are getting better. I will pray that the recovery process goes quickly and that Jake is up and running around, making messes and driving you crazy again! (-: Love you!
Oh and Happy Anniversary!
